Is the United States on the same path as Ancient Rome?

I remember while doing rome in history that we learned about all the factors that led to rome's downfall. During these unit, we looked at all of those factors, for example inflation, loss of tax base, dependecy on "outsiders", barbarian raids, etc and we compared these factors to problems in the US, and alot of them have at least some kind of resemblence to our problems. Are we on the same path that led Rome to its ultimate downfall, or are these just bumps in the road that will be fixed?

I'm just wondering what everyone's opinions are on this........

  1. Yes, sorta.

Unlike Rome, you can change your course if you act quickly enough.

  2. I hope not, the insides of my legs would chaff in a toga.

  3. Yes, we are.

  4. No, 2 different forms of government. And completely different ideas on individual rights.

  5. Not so sure about the Rome comparison, but there was an effort back in the 90's to implement a 'moral order' at the National level.

  6. We are Rome revived since 1776.

Notice the similarities between Rome's system, its bulidings look like the ones in Washington, we are Rome revived.

The Roman Senate is now the US Senate, etc.

  7. If obama gets elected, yes. That would definitely be the downfall.

  8. If you remember your history then you would know that the Western Roman Empire lasted over 400 years and the Eastern Roman Empire over 1000.

I think we will be fine.

  9.   The Romans did not have Nukes !!!

  10. A) Inflation

    Check (the dollar is dying)

    B) Loss of Tax Base

Check (Corporations are moving overseas and not paying taxes)

    C) Dependency on Outsiders

Check (everything is made in China)

    D) Barbarian Raids

Check (Illegal Aliens sucking up resources)

    E) over reaching their Armies Potential

Check (we've gutted the military, the individual units are kick *** but there's not enough of them)

d**n I agree the US is screwed.

  11. When a nation wants to control the world and depends on outsiders (illegal immigrants) and spends itself into oblivion, it will collapse.

The US will eventually have to default on the national debt and will probably get an autocratic government which will ultimately collapse.

Just like Rome, we are providing bread and circuses to the population.

We will cease to be a superpower.

  12. Ultimately yes, all empires must fall. But it's going to be a while, Rome was around for about 500 years and still influences our world today.

  13. the ultmate downfall of Rome came because their lack of a trained army and right now we have the best military in the world so we could use that to cling to power until things get better.....however we lose our military we will have the same fate as Rome

  14. They say history repeats itself.

I've brought this up in YA before, but the liberals don't watch the History Channel.
