  1. The YMCA began as a religious-based private facility-- now it is more civic-oriented and is considered a non-profit organization.  They are a public facility in the sense that anyone, regardless of background, can participate for a fee.

I worked as a teacher at a YMCA daycare.  We accepted children into our program from all different religous backgrounds, all parents had to due was fill out an application and if we had space the child was enrolled.  I was an employee and I am not religous at all.  The same for many of the other employees.  Our daycare was ran like any other daycare, based on education and skill building.
