The Yearling isnt boring at all. It starts off a little slow, because describing the family setup and the geography & climate of the place where they live is important to the story. Once the setting & personnel are established, the action is entirely interesting and meaningful for a teenager to read.

No, but it does start slowly.  Once you get past the first couple of chapters it gets better.
