My son is 17 and a full time student. He pays full fail fares. What are the best deals for regular train journeys at his age? Thanks.

  1. I have one of these and it does make a difference! It gives you a third off the fare so it's a great help. I also recommend your son getting a season ticket (or whatever is suggested). It saves money in the long run and saves time by not having to buy a ticket every morning. Also the ticket prices are more expensive before 10 am so that lessens the price considerabley.

  2. Yes it is and used in conjunction with advance purchase fares for longer Inter City journeys its even better value.

  3. Yes it is because the retrictions on Peak Time Travel are better than off peak, plus the card covers the whole country.

  4. It is no use for travelling to college each day, prior to 10am there is a minimum fare of £16 (excepting July and August).

  5. Yes the Young Persons Railcard is the best bet for him it costs £22 per year and entitles him to 34% off all ticket fares in standard travel but does not cover tickets purchased for First Class.

He can pick up a leaflet at any train station needs a photo to go with it, and its valid for one year, also make sure he carries it with him at all times that he travels because i have come across countless people who have forget them when purchasing tickets and the excess discount has to be re-paid and you cannot claim this back

Also you cannot im afraid use it to purchase season tickets
