Question:

Is the Yucca Palm tree poisonous to parakeets?

My parakeet just unexpectedly died and I have no idea. I have a Yucca palm tree right next to her cage and I was thinking that maybe she ate some and it was poisonous. Another posibility was that she got sick from the mineral stone and shell for the beak (which we bought at a pet store). It could have also been a disease, but if you know what it was please tell me! here are her symptoms: she was puffed up in a ball all day, she didn't talk at all, she always flew to the ground and she didn't fly to the high places she used to fly to, and she wouldn't leave her cage, I had a very hard time getting her out. Please tell me because it hurts more not knowing than it would to know. Thank you.

  1. Sorry about your bird.

Yukka is on the safe list of trees and plants for birds, so that didn't cause any problems.

Shell grit is actually really bad for birds, with exception of a few birds that don't shell seeds before eating them (canary is 1 type but the others aren't coming to mind right now). It can

block up a birds system and cause death. Shell grit should come with a warning on the pack, cause petshops always sell it as a "must have" for all birds, and it isn't recommended at all.

It doesn't mean that is what caused your bird to pass away though. It's really astounding the amount of every day household items that are toxic to birds, and the only way you are going to know for sure is to have a vet give an autopsy.

Again I'm really sorry about your bird.

  2. I'm sorry it was most likely the shell grit it is really bad for birds.
