No.  You must use the correct battery.

8.4V is one cell less than 9.6V - in a pinch, you can use a 9.6v pack IF you wire one less battery.

If your pack is sealed, you will not be able to modify the pack without damage.

If this is a rechargeable device, then the battery would be constantly overcharged, resulting in very short life and a battery pack that gets VERY hot, potentially a fire hazard.
