Question:

Is the amount of energy and matter in this universe infinite???

to describe my question properly, just follow wat i say, and tell me where am i going wrong.

alrite! its proved that the universe is expanding at a very large rate, and thus there are lot of galaxies and stars in our universe, but, if the universe is expanding and growing continuously and become infinite, then the amount of stars and galaxies will also become infinite, that means, there where be lot of matter, and according to E=mc(squared) there will be lot of energy release, as galaxies travel faster than speed of light, meaning, infinite big universe, infinite matter, and infinite energy, but the law of conservation of energy states, that energy can neither be created nor destroyed, and total amount of energy in the universe is constant. so doesn't tht mean tht the law is wrong, coz, energy is infinite in amount, and not constant. its just pretty confusing for me, so any smart ppl here, pls enlighten me, am i wrong sumwhere, or am i rite, of wat i just stated?

  1. I know the universe is expanding, but I was under the impression that there is still a finite number of galaxies. They are just getting further apart. I didn't think anything could travel faster than the speed of light either. Hmm interesting question.

  2. You basically say 'the universe is growing, this means the amount of galaxies is growing as well'.

This is not true. It is the distance between galaxies that increases, not their amount.

  3. Yes,you are right about expanding universe but energy and matter as a whole still remain finite. Its just the transformation of energy and its splitting up that goes on in the universe.Energy is not created.Precisesly, there are 20 constant values in the universe like, energy, mass, etc.Even if a single value changes the universe cannot exist. So its all finite.

  4. The molecules of any substance (Matter) contain Kinetic Energy. When that substance Expands it is simply the Matter (and its Energy) taking up more space.

The Mass of Matter involved and the Energy it contains DOES NOT change.

This can be the Analogy of an Expanding Universe.

Matter and Energy therefore must be 'Finite'.

The expanding Universe can be likened to the molecules of gases attempting to fill the space available to them.

"Matter (Energy) can neither be Created nor Destroyed but, it may be changed to other forms"

As, for example, the condensing of Gases to form new Stars and Worlds...etc, in the Cosmos.

  5. you should read up on randomness and entropy.

    may help you.

  6. ok maybe you dont understand the concept of infinity. no matter how far the universe expands, it cannot possibly become infinite. it will always have an end, no matter how far away the 2 opposite sides may be.

secondly, if the universe is expanding that doesnt mean that galaxies and matter have to become infinite. it just means that the distance between them becomes greater. the size of the universe has no correlation with the amount of matter in the universe (well, sort of. it does, but not in the way your describing it).

in short, your just a confused little kid that somehow made a whole complicated mess that makes no sense out of one of the simplest things in astronomy.

  7. Okay, crash course in cosmology coming up!

You are correct that the universe appears to be expanding, however, no new matter or energy is being created.

Think about an uninflated balloon with lots of dots drawn all over it. Now imagine that you are an ant on that surface of that balloon as it is inflated. You will see -all- the other dots move away from you, even if you start to move about the balloon. You cannot discern any "center" for this expansion to be coming from, and more importantly here, you'll never see any new dots!

Further, you are again correct that eventually, galaxies will start to move away from each other "faster than the speed of light". Going to back to the ant and balloon analogy, we can see that it is not actually the galaxies (the dots) moving, but the space in between them! The "fabric" of the ant's universe, that is, the surface of the balloon, is expanding in an inexplicable way.

When this begins to happen (supposing we are still sticking around to see it) many of the lights in the sky will dim and go out, never to be seen again. The space between them and us will be expanding so quickly that no light will ever again reach us from that part of the universe.

The law of conservation of energy (and thereby, matter) holds true, but we can still live in an ever-expanding universe.
