I agree with the first responder.  It is a fairly safe area but you always need to be wary and dont put your self in unsafe situations.

I believe you should be as carefull as in any other city:

- Don't walk alone in a dark lonely street.

- Don't walk away from the tourist area.

- Keep your purse and valuable things close to you

- For the airport/hotel rides, use a certified taxi driver or ask you travel agent to book you in advance.

- Be carefull who you make friends with, and of course don't get drunken when you're alone in a foreign country!!

I recently went there with 2 other girls, we had a great time and as we were 3, we ventured on hiring a taxi to take us to the Sacred Valley, probably as you're by yourself it would be wiser to get a tour where you're picked from your hotel and driven to the ruins/train station and stuff like that.

On another trip there (I live in Peru) I took a tour and met a Mexican girl who was travelling alone, she said she felt safer with the tour rather than saving the money by hiring a cab.

Tours mostly take you to the ruins around the area and leave you free to explore the city of Cusco. You shouldn't have problems being alone in the city if you are wise enough to stick to the rules.

I should warn you: many Cusco single men are out in hut of a "gringa" that will help them get a green card, we call them "bricheros" which is translated to "bridgers" cus they use the girls as a bridge to the US :)

I live in lima Peru, and I would recommend  to be carefull of those famous BRICHEROS who only want to hook up  with foreigners  to get a green card or their money, you can find lots of bricheros at the discos over there and in the plaza de armas (central park in cuzco), bricheros tend to look like hippies peruvian style, they will do anything to get you in bed, like  sliping pills in your drink or getting you drunk, many will deny they are bricheros but they all lie, I recommend you to stay the h**l away from those kinds of individuals, tell them you were a man before and your enjoying your new s*x change or something,  they only want to trick you big time.
