Is this book too young for kindergarten (6 year old)? Or is it about the right level of difficulty?

  1. Yes!!!!

  2. Any book is appropriate for K if it's used right.  You can design lesson plans that integrate the story of the caterpiller with science, health and art lessons.  The children are old enough to learn about how insects change from an egg to a caterpiller and then a butterfly.  You can also buy caterpillers that will change into butterflies in about one month - time that hands-on science experience with the book.  Do lessons on healthy eating and have the children nibble the fruits like caterpillers.  The children can make caterpillers from different sheets of paper and pipe cleaners.  Lastly, let the children paint a mural with caterpillers and butterflies and healthy food.

    good luck!

  3. I would think "The Very Hungry Catterpillar" would be appropriate for Kindergarteners. There are several websites with lesson plans for The Very Hungry Catterpillar which say it is appropriate for Kindergarteners (some are linked below).

  4. I have worked in a the school system for 22 years and I have read the Hungry Caterpillar to PreK and K children many times. They always love it and so do I.

  5. Yes I remember that book from grade school and that was about 25 years ago, so I think it is just fine.

  6. I teach this to as young as three yrs. old to preK. this book is perfect for 6 yr olds. here is a couple of links to give you lesson ideas. this is a fun story for kids! I am getting a butterfly habitat so kids can watch the butterfly come out of a cacoon, and relate the experience to the book. enjoy!

  7. Absolutely!! Most kids love this story! You can do so many things, such as counting. colors, and sequencing. You can also make a felt story out of the story items so the kids can match and practice their verbal skills. Just let your imagination go. This is a great book.

  8. This is a great book for Kindergarten age child.  I still remember when I was in Kindergarten my teacher had a week devoted to Eric Carle.  We read several of his books and did various activities and lessons based on the stories and characters.

Check out your local library as well.  Our library has book lists that are age and grade specific....not to mention the librarians would be happy to help you out with any other questions you might have.

  9. yes. eric carle's books are perfect for that age group.

    have a nice day!

  10. It's a great book!  I think they might be more advanced than most adults are giving them credit, but you can make it more advanced if you approach it right.

You can incorporate so many things: food choices and nutrition, caterpillar to butterfly is a big word "metamorphosis", the value of taking time to rest, the fact that we all grow up, and you can make collages since Eric Carle does such great art.

That's a great book chock full of possibilities!  Have fun with them, it's going to be great.  Oooh I just googled Eric Carle to ensure I was spelling his last name correctly and found this:
