  1. Take the City Cat river cruise. It will take you the full reach of the river and stop off at Southbank - get off and have a good wander around. More interactive for the kids I would think

  2. Hi!

I do recommend you check out the Mt Coot-tha lookout, the view is amazing and you'll get to see the span of the majority of the city.  There are some great photo opportunities up there and it will surely prove a memorable occasion for your family, especially if you have kids who perhaps aren't familiar with a city environment.  There's also a cafe/gift shop and a restaurant up the top, in case you'd like a light meal or refreshment.

Not too far from the turnoff to the lookout is Simpsons Rd, which takes you to a nice little picnic area with a bushwalking track leading to Simpson Falls.  I've done the walk myself, and although there was no running water at the time of the year I went, it was still highly enjoyable and not too strenuous.

Also, at the base of Mt Coot-tha you'll find the Botanical Gardens, which again I highly recommend for a walk.  If the kids scoff at the idea of the Botanical Gardens, take them into the Planetarium to learn about the solar system and do some stargazing.

And on top of all that, I agree with everyone above who has suggested to catch a Citycat for a river tour.  You'll love it.

Hope you enjoy your trip to our fine city :-)

  3. Would you believe it, I have never been to Mt Cootha lookout so I can't say if it is good. Southbank Parklands is suppose to be a family friendly area and very popular.

If you are off to the Gold Coast, have you been to Springbrook?, if no well that has one very good lookout up there with heaps of things to do and see as well, such as the Mouse Houses, Glow Worms and the English Gardens to name a few.

  4. My Mum and I went there a few months ago and found it a bit icky (graffiti, dirty, old) and the food at the nearby cafe was expensive and very average.  In saying all that before I get blasted, it provides a nice view of the vastness of the city of Brisbane.  I don't know if it is 'worth it' as you ask though.

I would rather you see Brisbane from Southbank or Riverside.  They are really great, well kept, happening places.

Maybe do the story bridge climb if time/money permits (haven't done it - scared speechless of heights!).

If scenery is your thing, the drives to Maleny/Mapleton (Australia Zoo up the road); Mt Tamborine or Mt Glorious/Mt Nebo are truly beautiful.

    Have a safe, fun trip.

  5. Visit Australia Zoo

For great value go to southbank on the river and get a translink ticket and go for a citycat boat ride up and down the river, go for a train ride to Ipswich and see the train museum, have a swim at southbank, visit the museum at southbank (althgough it costs) and have a picnic.

All for the cost of a translink ticket which is cheap 5 ot 7 bucks adults for all day. plus museum entry and train museum entry

  6. Mt. Coot-tha is breathtaking!

  7. not with kids, sorry.

    kids do "NOT" like lookouts!

and the restaurant up there is not all that happening.

Southbank or a river cruise is much much better with kids.

TAKE CARE of your kids at southbank though, do not let them out of your sight as it is a hotspot for creepy people.

zoo's (australian zoo or alma park zoo for younger kids) is good, too.

  8. Mt Coot-tha is definitely worth a look and you should definitely take a round trip on the Citycat stopping off at Southbank Parklands where there is a brilliant swimming beach.

  9. well worth the 15/20 min drive up there(or bus ride) great view's of near the whole of Brisbane & suburb's on a good day you can see a long way across to morton island/morton bay & the mountains around the gap

binoculars will inprove the view a lot or use the telescopes up there

the view at night is good to

have lunch or a snack at the restrant or just get a drink & sit on the grass & enjoy the view

  10. I love Mt. Coottha because its close to the city, it's cool weather wise, and beautiful with vistas out to the ocean.  The restaurants are pretty, and you do not feel hurried.  I would say, absolutely go.  I can't wait till Sept. when I will be back there.  It doesn't take long to get there from Brisbane, about l5 or 20 min.

  11. It is worth it. Better at night though. The city is spectacular whilst lit up. South bank is also a good family outing, it has a pool, so take your togs with you.
