This is a stupid idea, used by anti-royalists. It depends which branch you follow - the queen is a direct descendent of the Kings of Scotland, the Kings of France, Germany, Denmark, etc. yet is one of the few English people who can actually prove she is descended from both Anglo-Saxons and Normans. She has bloodlines to 'great' English kings such as Alfred (a descendent of Saxon Germans of course), Henry V (who was three-quarters French by descent) and to the Houses of York and of Lancaster (who were themselves descended from Angevin Dukes of France). Because one of her ancestors spoke with a funny German accent 170 years ago or because she married Philip, a member of the German Royal family of Greece (!), they are called 'Germans'. By the same rules I reckon 90% of the population of England would be unable to claim they are English (including me seeing as I had 4 great-grandparents born in Ireland). Incidentally, only the Queen has the surname Windsor; all her children are officially Mountbatten-Windsor and I'm hoping Charles will revert to the proper system and be the first monarch of the House of Mountbatten in honour of his great uncle Louis Mountbatten, one of the finest Englishmen of his day (despite his father being born in Austria and his mother in England but both being German royalty)
