  1. Butter should be kept in the fridge so it doesn't go rancid.

  2. I usually store butter in the fridge when I buy it but I don't like to wait for the butter to become soft when I need it. So my friend's mother showed me a technique to keep about half a stick of butter outside and rest in the fridge. All you have to do is put the butter in a bowl and pour cold water into it. The butter will float and will remain fresh, so this way you have soft butter when you need it and rest of your butter is in the fridge. I also change that water if I don't use the butter. 3. As long as it is covered, your kitchen does not get too hot and you go through it fairly quickly, it is fine to store your butter dish on the counter or table.  If you like to keep your butter out of the fridge so that it is easy to spread, they sell butter crocks at kitchen stores that keep the butter fresh and cool while allowing it to be kept out with out the worry of it going bad.

  4. You can do what you want with it.  But when left out the butter sometimes gets warm and separates.  If left out for a long time , it can even grow a fungus.  I usually keep mine in the fridge.

  5. Most people keep it in the fridge.  But, when I was a kid my mother always kept it in the pantry.  Cool dark place.  Keeps it soft too.  But if you don't use it up it will turn rancid.  Then of course you have to dispose of it. You make the call.
