The venom of the Coral Snake is neurotoxic, paralyzing the nerves.  Often handled with impunity by reckless persons.  Usually hangs on while biting, injecting as much venom as possible.  There is a high percentage of fatalities from the coral snake bite.  Treatment should start as soon as possible.

About three species of coral snakes are found in the United States.

The Arizona Coral Snake (Micruroides) is found only in the Southwestern United States.

There is no snake called a "California" Coral Snake.

There IS a Kingsnake that lives in California that LOOKS like a Coral Snake, yet is not.  It is a harmless snake that is prized by Herpitologists. It is endangered due to over-collecting.  This beautiful snake feeds on small rodents, and other snakes, including Rattlesnakes.

The Coral Snake is venomous, but rarely bites.  Look up pictures of the two on the internet so you can tell the difference and ID the snake you're referring to.
