  1. A converse is something that has been reversed (an opposite).

John Dalton's theory had 4 parts:

    (1) All matter is made of atoms, which are indivisible and indestructible.

The converse might be Anything made of atoms, which are indivisible and indestructible is matter Indivisible and indestructible atoms make up all matter.

Atoms can be subdivided and transformed into energy during nuclear reactions.

    (2) All atoms of a given element are identical in mass and properties.

The converse might be All atoms identical in mass and properties are the same element.

Isotopes of the same element have different masses.  Some can be radioactive and others might not be.

    (3) Compounds are formed by a combination of two or more different kinds of atoms.

The converse might be A combination of two or more different kinds of atoms is a compound.

This converse would not be true for physical combination (mixtures).

    (4) A chemical reaction is a rearrangement of atoms.

The converse might be A rearrangement of atoms is a chemical reaction.

This converse would not be true for conformational changes (like chair and boat forms of cyclohexane).
