  1. All my kids get time-outs. Theys are 6, 8, 11, and 13. I make them stand with their backs to the wall--their backs and legs have to touch the wall at all times-- and their arms out in front of them for 2-5 minutes. Believe me, this works much better than removing privileges

  2. A child over 6 should not be put in time-out at all.  They are too old for this type of punishment.  If they are 6 or less, the corner is definitely a good place.  The rule of thumb is one minute for each year of their age......so 5 minutes for a 5 year old.

Once they are 7 and older, the best punishment is taking away priviledges, such as "no television for three days."   That hits them MUCH harder than a time out.

  3. Twelve year olds shouldn't have "time-outs", actually anyone above five is ready for a different means of punishment!

  4. Well it depends on what kind of child you kid is.

Agressive children do learn from time out. But senitve or just happy go luck kids learn by spanking. If you do not believe spanking (I am personally with you if you are) the amount of minutes in there age.

I used this on my niece when she hit and kicked me and it works.  a corner is fine as long as they do not have anything in there hands.

  5. The purpose of a time out is to bring the child back into control. It's meant to be a little demeaning.

I've always heard the amount of time should be equal to the age - 6 minutes for a 6 year old, etc.

By 12, there should be a far more effective mode of punishment, though. I'd say time outs should stop at about 9, and more restrictive methods should be used - like losing TV, computer or game privileges.

  6. Time Outs can work up to the age of 12. The corner is the best method. Have them stand in the corner with thier nose touching the wall and thier hands behind thier back.  Have them stand in the corner for at least 5 minutes  (all depends on how bad the kid behaved) and if they do not behave you can add another minute. Longest time you can make them stand in the corner is an hour.

  7. I put my son in the corner for the same amount of minutes as his age- (5 years old-5 minutes)

  8. Absolutely not!  It worked wonders for my now 7 yr old.  I started it with him when he was about 1 1/2 and it works.  To tell you the truth, i don't know what is a sufficient time, use your own discretion.

  9. hehe time-out never worked for  my kids ... just to let you know my background im 22 and was a nanny for 3 yrs and the kids that i kept were girl 12, boy 10, boy 6, and twins girl and boy 2... i love them like my own. Now something you need to keep in mind is that every kid is DIFFERENT!! and what works with one wont work with the other. only one of 5 kids did time out work for and the was the 10 yr boy and the only reason it worked with him is because he would get sooo embarrassed " he thought he was to old to stand in the corner" lol but it worked... oh and the corner is the best time out spot. and as fare and time for timeout total depends on the kid and if you are going to use time out YOU HAVE TO MAKE THE KID stay in timeout for long enough that it does some good ( and make sure when you let them come out they can tell you why they were in timeout or the "time out" did no goo" do you know what i mean... and as for the other kids that you have to find other disaplan for (good luck) and work hard to find the right thing... spanking work well for the kids that are unruly and they will understand that you mean business and that you are the boss its you job to make sure you teach you kids right from wrong and respect!  its very important...
