I am considering moving from NJ to Regina. In terms of housing, employment and everything else, how do they compare?

  1. First of all have you been to Regina, Sask before?  I'm only saying this because its ALOT different from living in New Jersey.  Sorry, I went to school in Sask. but it wasn't for me.  The winters are not easy to take especially if you are used to mild ones.  I've lived in both countries and currently live in the U.S. so I have a handle on the cost of living issue.  Taxes in Canada are generally higher than in the U.S.  In Canada, they have a federal sales tax, on top of any provincial sales taxes when you purchase goods.  I would say that some things are more expensive in Canada are some are not any more expensive than in the U.S.  Vehicle registration is considerably less expensive in most Canadian provinces when compared to many states.  The cost of higher education, university is a bargain in Canada compared to the U.S.  You can get a degree for a fraction of the price in the U.S.  You will also never go broke paying medical bills in Canada...what medical bills?  If you lose your job...then you will not lose your medical benefits...something I currently can't say living in California.  I've heard that Saskatchewan is booming because of commodity prices...potash, oil and wheat...I guess it depends on what your job field is.  If you are seriously contemplating the move, I would at least first make a visit there to see if you think you can handle it.  Its not for everyone.  Good luck!

PS salaries in the U.S. and Canada depend on what kind or work you do.  For instance, if you are a teacher than you want to live in Canada, as they generally earn more than their american counterparts.

  2. True, but our healthcare is awesome!

  3. The cost of living is higher, but has the 3rd highest standard of living in the world.  (next to Norway and Sweden.  USA is #6)  Even though the Canadian Dollar is at par with the US Dollar prices are still higher here.  Tax is also quite high.  GST (Goods and Services tax-Federal tax) is 5%, and then PST (Provincial Sales Tax) is added, though the rate differes accoding to the provence.  In Saskatchewan it is 5%.

  4. Everytime I visit Canada I am amazed at how expensive most things are.  Housing would be in the same ballpark as NJ, but the everyday things are ridiculously expensive.  Add on top of that a double-digit sales tax.  It's no wonder that many Canadians regularly shop in the US.

  5. Depends where you go - you can find expensive places, eg good inner city with $800 for a batchelor apt and but small towns with $800 for a small house. NJ is a big place so it isn't easy to compare.

I know that Americans feel that Canucks go on and on about universal healthcare but it really does protect you, [never refused, no premiums going up because you have been sick.]
