Is the cricketing nation tripping over itself?

Yes we may have got a larger fan base with the IPL...but it's ruining our players and what is supposed to be important to our cricketers....something has to change.

For example, if you watch test cricket on TV etc you will realise that you can probably hear the batsmen's footsteps...there's no atmosphere. Are we losing test cricket, one of the most skillfull games?

We're going to see earlier retirements of cricketing greats... their hectic schedules are making them injury prone.

match fixing, racial abuse, no respect etc are creeping into the cricketing arena.

there are so many tiny faults in cricket and we're just watching them grow. We could be watching cricket grow but at the same time watching it demolish.

We're modernising cricket but is it for the better?

Are we moving to quickly?

What are your thaughts?

What are your ideas on the world of cricket?

  1. Agree with you.

    But who is to blame???

BCCI,cricketers, media or the ones who auction players just like anything else or we the people......

T20 has gained so much popularity, clearly indicates that common people really don't care about ethics, principals, game spirit or anything like that. What they want is quick entertainment and they are getting that.

    And who cares!!

Not all think like you and me.Money is the motivating factor. No one seems to think deeply into the issues you have listed.Everyone is running just like mad.

But I am not a pessimist and I don't have the habit of painting gloomy pictures.Change is inevitable,we have to accept that.

But I just wish that if it changes,it changes for the good of the game!!!!

  2. all changes in cricket are for d better... d IPL has bought indian players closer with d foreign players and  helps creating.. all in all its for d  bettermentof cricket... And test cricket was, is and will remain d same even though it may appear to diminsish...

  3. people dont like it cos its" change "and people dont like the "C "word cos they get used to the status quo

20/20 is great for the game its new! its young !its exiting !

take a look at the West Indies story once the BEST cricket nation in the world  but the kids started to get bored with cricket and wanted to play soccer and basket ball look how far they have fallen now cos the youth lost interest

this has also happened in other cricketing country's to a lesser extent, like England they had to pump so many millions into it to save it   ,and get where it is now ,,but it isnt as popular as in the 60s and 70s  SO IPL IS GOOD FOR THE FUTURE !!

  4. well Mel, i disagree on with your comment on Test cricket having no atmosphere, it just has a different atmophere to T20 and ODIs, but that doesnt mean it has no atmophere at all

i do believe we will see more early retirements because of the over crowding of the cricketing calandar

cricket is being modernised and concentrated, but the game will never die as it will always live the lovers of the game, as far as T20 cricket being a threat to Test matches, well this argument was happening 30 years ago when ODIs were becoming more regualar, but they learned to co-exsist, it will be the same with T20, but to someone like me, nothing will ever be better than a Test match!

as i said, i disagree on test cricket having no atmosphere, but that doesnt mean i dont think you have asked a very good question!

P.S you seem to be doing that alot lately, as i seem to be giving out more stars and you seem to be getting alot of them lol

  5. Wav.. I appreciate your thinking.. It is amazing..

First of all, let me tell you my friend..

    - Cricket is always a gentleman's game. Nowadays, it is actually diverted its way.. That too just for money.. This is gonna hide the fun with cricket...  Just an example: IPL

    - Nobody would really watch test cricket, one of the most sweetest forms of cricket. they dont have time

    -  These things would not last long. This is gonna hit back one day.. and all the cricket loving nations neglect their players..

  6. A few points here:

    1. Why are we assuming that the interest in test cricket will go down after this. There are two series being played now and can the fans of any of these 4 countries claim that they are not interested in the test cricket being played?

    2. There have been so many changes in test cricket since its inception, such as limiting it to 5 days, use of modern technology, etc.that it is virtually unrecognizable from the original. And yet people swear by the mutated version as the original. What is to stop people from accepting the T20 form as well? Anyway, one day cricket also faced protests from such dinosaurs and still coexists with test cricket.

3.Match fixing, racial abuse, etc. are being brought to awareness due to techology. Can we be sure it never existed before this. There are documented cases of personal abuse, about the sad death of a players sister, I think, which was made the butt of abuse. Worse than racial abuse. Cricket still  survived, didn't it?

    4. I think we should stop being doomsday announcers and understand that T20 is not here to replace any other form of cricket, but to enhance it, the way one-day cricket improved test cricket. About player injuries, the problem has happened since this year's edition was forced into the schedule. Next year, it is supposed to have a more planned entry. Also, players who choose money over their recuperation should not brag about playing for their country and I think their country can also do without them. If they can't, then they should accept the character of their players.

I think we are working up a lather over T20 and its imagined problems, rather than looking towards the benefits that may come our way. We need to stop sticking our heads in the sand and look up.

EDIT: And thank you Mel, for acknowledging my views without taking it personally. I feel humbled by your response.

  7. Modernizing and Commercializing will bring bad stuff such as  match fixing, racial abuse, no respect into Cricket....But let us hope that someone will pop up and control them. The good thing about "Modernizing and Commercializing" Cricket is that the competition has increased and it triggers players to play better Cricket. And it is becoming more and more entertaining. Too many sixes in an inning, full-house crowd ,cheerleaders and etc.

Also I don't agree that good players retire earlier as players like Sanath, Hayden, Murali,  McGrath, Shane Warne and etc. are still playing first-class Cricket (not all are playing for the national team)....and all of them are 35+.
