It is a fruit but most people like to call it a vegetable . In our minds things that are sweet are fruit. I just don't give it much thought

They are technically fruits because they have seeds but they are widely known as vegetables so everyone calls them vegetables.

I think that botanically speaking, if it will eventually fall into your hands it is a fruit.
