Question:

Is the delay of Half-Blood Prince due to the success of The Dark Knight?

This appears to be the main reason for it, as Warner Brothers apparently feel that this move will make the new Harry Potter a bigger success.

My opinion is though that The Dark Knight would still have been a big success even if it had been released at the beginning of this year.

  1. nope

harry potter moved to summer to make more money.

the dark knight will be on dvd by then of course

it would make just as much as it would if it stayed the same

  2. That is what I have been reading all over the net.  I would of thought that HP and The Dark Knight would not of had that much over lap in the same audience, but that is only my take on it.

Bummer, I was looking forward to it. :(

  3. They moved it because they want to make more money and to do that they'd release it in the summer. It was a good move considering twilight is coming out....

  4. no actually the delay in my opinion is because of the move date of the twilight movie...it was December 12 before now it is November.21, so then harry potter was moved to july i think next year? it honestly has nothing to do with the dark knight...

anyhow i don't know but read this:

    http://movies.yahoo.com/mv/news/ap/20080...

  5. i think warner brothers wanted to cash in on TDK's success by releasing a big budget and high-profile movie on the same weekend.  it's also because that weekend turned out to be open and nothing else came out.  personally, i think they want to build hype.  and they might've done well in november anyway!

  6. HBP would never be as big as the Dark Knight despite a summer opening.

The Dark Knight, being a Nolan film, is superior in quality and has an all-star cast with lead actors who know how to get in character. Plus, TDK calls for repeat viewings.

  7. That's probably the best reason for it. Its kinda hard to put out a movie knowing it will get buried in all the Dark Knight Hype. It will make more money if it doesn't go up against a Juggernaut like The Dark Night. It's best to wait till all the hype dies down then release it,allowing it to get its own hype.

  8. I do believe that the postponement of the Half-Blood Prince is due to The Dark Knight's success.  Warner Brother's is responsible for both of the films and I think that once the execs at WB saw the massive cash intake from TDK, they figured they'd try and hit the summer movie mother load again next year...which strays from the typical holiday releases of the other Potter films.  Another reason might be because they didn't want TDK's massive success to overshadow the release of the HP film, which I think is preposterous because the HP franchise already has a huge following of fans that have been awaiting this film since the release of the Order of the Phoenix.

I don't agree with this decision for two reasons. Firstly because I think Harry Potter films are bound to do well regardless of the time they are released and secondly because I am a huge Harry Potter fan and cannot wait for the release of the movie!!!

To finish, I agree with your opinion that The Dark Knight would have been successful despite the release date. In fact, it probably would have grossed even more because that would mean the release would have been closer to Mr. Heath Ledger's unfortunate death.  Besides,  it's the movie, not the season that patrons care about.  If I were a director I would be upset that the production company didn't have enough faith in my work that they'd believe it could carry itself.  And with the extensive marketing campaign WB developed for TDK, of course it was gonna sell.

  9. I think Warner Brothers thought they would get more money in a summer slot with Harry Potter, but I don't think so. Fans of the film are angry and that move upset them.

But oh well Twilight comes out sooner so I don't really care about the Harry Potter film.
