Hi, I will be 17 in August 2009, but many of my friends and relatives have told me that the driving age will increase to 18 in April 2009, meaning that I won't be able to drive until the following year. Is this true?

  1. Hi, I own and run a driving school in the UK and this rumour has been going round literally for years.

    It's not true.

The driving age is NOT increasing to 18.

So you have no need to worry.

What is happening is that there is currently a consultation in progress regarding various proposed changes to the UK driving test and how people are taught to drive. This consultation is in it's very early stages and any changes will take a few years to be implemented. There are no plans to increase the age at which people can start to learn to drive though.

  2. 17? In Pennsylvania the driving age is 16.

  3. In south africa it is anyways 18. You can get your learners on 17 but your license on 18. That totally sucks!

  4. i think in most states that bill didnt pass because it would put working parents at a great inconvineince to drive their kids everywhere like school or sports, (it wasnt passed in florida where i live)

  5. I'm not really sure, but I heard lots of rumors from my friends about the same thing before I started driving. The best thing to do would be to call (or go to) your local DMV and ask them. They would know better than anyone else.
