  1. It's not the same drug, no.  The two drugs are functionally related in that both are antidepressants.  They aren't chemically related, though.  As noted above, one is a tricyclic compound, a class of antidepressants that mostly went out of favor with the discovery of SSRIs 20 years ago.  Paxil is an SSRI, the most popular type of antidepressant nowadays, due to their having more easily tolerated side effects than the tricyclic antidepressants


  2. No, the two drugs you mentioned are not same.

    Amitryptiline is tricyclic anti-depressant while paxil (Paroxetine) is a SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor).

    Both drugs are used for treatment of Depression (I am not going into medicine details). And, paxil being more selective causes less systemic side effects than amitrptyline.

    However, recent controversy (2007) about withdrawal symptoms of paxil has slighty decreased its use. Also, there are some safety concerns about use of Paxil in pregnant women. Having said that, Don't stop Paxil without consulting with your doctor first.
