The Sun appears to rise in the east and set in the west; from the perspective of the distant stars, this is an illusion, caused by the Earth rotating from west to east--counter-clockwise as seen from above the north pole.  Since this is the same direction as the Earth's revolution around the Sun, the Earth's rotation is considered direct.
