Is the economic development of developing countries more important than protecting the environment?

No. I strongly believe that both should go hand-in-hand. Because the Global Warming threat is very real.

We should not forsake one for the other.

Yes it is otherwise how is that fair when booming economies such as China have the ability to exploit the environment in any way they wish.

World leaders seem to think so since the worst polluters are mostly emerging countries (and China) that will not sign the Kyoto Agreement and are not pressured to do so.

Yes, they need to be brought into the 21st century.
