Question:

Is the end really nigh?

I heard on the news that the world could be sucked into itself by a black hole. These scientists are trying to recreate the big bang or something and it COULD cause a little black hole. They're starting the machine soon - or so I've heard. Now I'm really worried.

If you can't give me an answer, at least try to console me. It's scary.

  1. People have always tried to estimate the end and have given dates, it hasnt happened yet?

  2. Redirect your worry to something more likely to do you harm, such as heart disease.  Ride a bike on the streets.  It will take your mind off of the other nonsense.

  3. The LHC gets a particle moving at high energy and smashes it into another. That's all it does.

But this experiment has been going on here on Earth since the Earth formed.  High energy cosmic rays, which are typically atoms stripped of their electrons, have energies much, much higher than the LHC can produce.  While you've been reading this, several have passed through your body.  And sometimes these things do a head on collision with the stuff of the Earth.  If the LHC can create a small black hole, then so can cosmic rays.  The Earth is still here, so it's safe.

  4. that's interesting I'd like to read up on that...

But listen to me you really shouldn't worry.  no matter how old you are, I doubt something of that size could all happen in our lifetimes or even our next lives.  just live and don't worry =)

  5. A black hole can & will rip you into several particles. You'd've no organs left because even they theirselves will be gone, too. The Earth is most likely to fall into a black hole in approximately >1,000,000-<1,000,000,000,000 years from now. That is way beyond the extinction of Homo sapiens sapiens.
