Is the government keeping gasoline prices high to encourage alternative energy development?

I was told that nothing really gets done in America unless someone can make some money from the issue. I suspect that the leaders of government has decided that the price of gasoline needs to stay high so there will be an reason to spend the money necessary to develop alternative sources of fuel and the electric car.

They have been talking about the need to find alternative energy and limit our dependence on foreign oil for years but nothing really is done because there was always cheap fuel and there was thus no financial incentive.

Is this all a plan to force Americans to use less oil and find a way to use alternative fuels?

  1. Do what myself & my husband are doing we stumbled on a website that tells you how to convert you car to run partly on water & gasoline saving us 60% on our car fuel costs. This is a realistic & cost effective way to help the environment & save a lot of money on running your vehicles.

  2. All I know is it forced ME personally to find an alternative! I bought 2 cars that run only on natural gas (methane), and I'm so glad I did. They run 99% cleaner than gasoline cars, plus it costs me under $10 to fill up! I'm saving a lot of money. As for the government doing it, I doubt it. Gasoline is much, much more expensive in European countries than the USA. Whoever or whatever is causing it, it can be a good thing if it gets everybody off their butts and changing their ways, eh?

  3. In a round about way, yes the government is keeping the cost of gasoline high.

The cost of gasoline is high because of supply and demand and the value of the dollar.

The democrat party has been voting against almost 85% of the new energy policies that would allow for more drilling and thus add to the supply of oil for more than thirty years.

For thirty years solar power has been sold as the future and we my be waiting thirty more years away from that reality. Or, it may never happen.

Until then, I hope you look forward to $6.00/gallon gasoline.

  4. WELL YOU THINK WRONG -----THE ONLY THING THE GOVERNMENT CONTROLS IS THE TAX ON GAS . THE REASON GAS IS HIGHER IS BECAUSE THE DOLLAR IS LOWER THAN IT EVER HAS BEEN ----THE REASON IS TRADE-DEFICIT -----AS WE IMPORT MORE THAN WE SELL -----THE DOLLAR GOES LOWER ------GAS GOES HIGHER --IN PART THE IMPORT FUEL EFFICIENT CARS THAT AMERICANS BUY IS CAUSING IT , THE REST IS BUYING CHINA IMPORTS . AS WE BUY IMPORTS AND NOT MADE IN AMERICA ----WE CAUSE IT .

  5. The government DOES NOT control the price of gasoline.

Supply & Demand does and so does speculation.

  6. The big oil companies drive the prices at the pumps and are the major stumbling block to finding new resources.  The government is in control of is our "reserve." There are thousands of capped wells in Texas and Oklahoma that we could open and use to produce oil but, the government won't allow those wells to be opened.  We have enough fuel in those capped wells to provide us with gasoline for many years.  We could open them and use that gas, becoming self-sufficient with our own supply.  And, while we did so, research could be made for an alternate source of fuel.

  7. No it is the Democrats that will not let US drill . They want the US to buy our oil from our Enemy ,and not supply our own  oil .They have many excuses and for now have a strangle hold on US.
