  1. Yes, many experimenters will raise plants for experiments in a greenhouse, specifically because one can control environmental conditions. One common design is to rear seeds collected from a number of different habitat types to the seedling stage (or beyond), either to measure survival and growth to that stage, or as a prelude to then transplanting them to enclosures in the wild. If it's done properly, then that produces what is often referred to as a "common garden" environment. Of course, just how controlled the environment is will depend on the quality of the greenhouse/growth chamber in question.
