Question:

Is the hardwood floor ruined?

I moved in a house built in 1952. There was carpet in the front room. When I pulled it up there was like particle board nailed all over the floor and carpet was stapled into that. I can see the hardwood flooring beneath this board stuff. So can I pull it up and refinish? Or should I just put more carpet?

  1. Hardwood floor is hard, and usually 3/4 thick, I love it myself, but it is alot of hard work and beer, I would do it if it were I..

  2. Go for the wood!

  3. Im a flooring contractor go for the refinish its like hidden equity and u can refinish it to any color you want and sheen level and for damages u can repair them you will be amazed on how they will look if you decide to go with the wood floors but have it done professionally cause the machines you will find at hardware stores to rent simply dont cut it

  4. I like hardwood floors. Carpet only traps the dirt in it and under it. You really won't know how much repair to the hardwood floor is needed until you get down to it and inspect it. It might need a lot of work ,maybe not. Only looking at it will tell. Good luck. Either way the particle board is junk. If it gets wet too much it will quickly fail and also need repair. I would only have used plywood myself.

  5. whomever put the board over the hard wood either was planning on maybe some day refinishing it or your going to find a big hole. or some kind of damage. if its possible try looking at the floor from underneath. like from the basement. if it looks good go ahead and try removing the board covering the hardwood. natural floors are alto nicer to look at and will increase the value of your home apposed to carpet.

  6. it will be tough to repair it after the carpet. just keep more carpet

  7. Normally, carpet would be installed directly over hardwood...I suspect there is something wrong somewhere with the hardwood. Good luck

  8. yes all you have to do is get a floor sander sand it down and then then for the big holes get wood peg i think thats what they call them and drill a hole just a lil smaller then the hole and line the gran up and hit the peg in the hole use something sharp to cut the peg as close to the wood floor as you can and then re stain the floor it will be a lot of work but it can be done
