  1. No.  India has an exclusive economic zone for 200 nautical miles (370 km) from land, but ships have a right of passage as close as 12 nautical miles (22.2 km).  They can come even closer, but are then subject to Indian regulation and inspection.

  2. arey!! you think INDIA can own an ocean??

  3. no, Indian ocean is not an Indian water body but India and other country surround it can use its minerals like oil extraction to some extent

  4. The name was given very earlier at dt time India was a leading country, many other countries were also joined to it so and even many islands and countries on dt ocean were not still discovered so it was named as Indian Ocean But It is not restricted only to India.

  5. no it does not belongs to india . it was named on the name of india.

  6. Indian Ocean is one of 3 oceans (Arctic Sea that is much smaller cannot be considered as an Ocean). Half of the sea area is Pacific Ocean; Atlantic ocean is half of Pacific Ocean and Indian ocean is slightly smaller than Atlantic Ocean. It is almost a circle of diameter of a quarter of earth's corcumference (90degrees, 5400 nautical miles, 6300 stat.mile or 10,000km).

In 11 to 15th centuries when Indian goods were a craze in Europe, and due to the Arabs as mediators making all the profit, Europeans were out to find a sea route to india, bypassing the Arabs. They knew from Ptolemy's map that India is at the head of  big ocean they called 'Indian Ocean'. But for their India-centric approach, the ocean could have been named as something else.

India is at its apex. South Africa in west and Australia in east are at the approaches to the ocean. Apart from these 3, there are countries between, on the rim of ocean and its seas, bays and gulfs.

They are (from east) - Indonesia, East Timor, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Burma (Myanmar), Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Yemen, Jordan, Israel, Egypt, Sudan, Djibouti, Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Maldives, Seychelles, mauritius, Reunion & Madagascar.

A third of humanity lives around it. Almost 60% of world's oil exports move through this ocean and that is its importance.

This ocean unlike the other two is blocked (by India) in the north from access to Arctic Sea. perhaps this factor is responsible to the phenomenon of Monsoon, unique to south & south east Asia, altough north of Australia and the caribbean display monsoon like climates.

  7. India has a long coastline on indian ocean

but indian ocean is not an indian water body.

  8. No it does not belong to india.

  9. Indian ocean is an ocean that surrounds indian subcontinent and it touches countries like India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Maldives, etc......It does not belong to India.
