  1. Absolutely!! On a sunny day the tree is using more water to cool it's leaves. On a rainy day the water intake is not as high. Though the tree is usually drawing some water all the time through it's tunk to bring nutrients up for the new growth.

  2. Theoretically yes.  Water is used during photosynthesis, so a plant would need more water on sunny days.

  3. Both of the above are right...transpiration (or evaporation from the leaves) would be greater on a sunny day, as would water used in photosynthesis.  The tree doesn't use or lose much water on a rainy day.

  4. It can - mainly because of transpiration. Transpiration occurs because of openings in the stem and leaves in plants. On sunny days, water vapor is released through the stomata (small openings in leaves) causing negative pressure on the upper parts of the plant. This negative pressure draws water through the roots.  Wikipedia says "A fully grown tree may lose several hundred gallons (a few cubic meters) of water through its leaves on a hot, dry day. About 90% of the water that enters a plant's roots is used for [the transpiration] process." Therefore, on a hot, dry day, the plant can take in a lot of water (as long as its available). If no water is available, it will intake lots of water next time it rains! :)

  5. A tree that is under drought stress, when it gets some rain will drink the soil dry. So its fastest uptake is when it has been dry but is getting moisture.

Trees also take in water from the rain directly when they are dry.

Trees in a rain forest gobble up enormouse quantities during rains... they act as luxury users of water, whereas if they ae getting little water on a sunny day, they cut back their use of water,

Even during a rain, photosynthesis continues if there is moderate amount of sunlight.
