iPod accepts only MP4 format video, you need third party software to convert dvd to MP4, I always use Aimersoft iPod Converter Suite, it can easily convert dvd to ipod with high quality, that's really good, you can check it out here for free:

Then just follow below steps to add video to iPod.

1. Open iTunes and click "File" to add your videos to iTunes library.

iPod can only support mpeg4 video. It's actually quite hard to turn a DVD into ipod format - it takes a long time and uses a lot of computer resources, be lucky your computer doesn't crash while converting the DVD.  Unless, you have DVR, than it's really easy.  Ipods are the easiest MP3 players to use, even if they are over-priced.
