I mean we let WW2 go on for 2 years and we didn't do anything and what happened we lost our whole Pacific Fleet......why is it Americans are back to that mind set it's not our problem I mean the RUssia attack on Georgia is a attack against the US they are attacking a US ally....I mean the fact that Americans involved themselves for the years after ww2 is one of the reasons why there was no ww3 so why is it now were just sitting back and looking at everything and saying its not our problem?

  1. We flourished because of our "isolationism" strategy, staying away from European conflicts. Maybe if we did that we could lose a lot less money in lost causes like those in the Middle East.

  2. The simple answer to that is its Russia and the U.S have no interests in the region.

The U.S is presented as the 'enforcer' of democracy for the world. But there has to be some underlying rules for this enforcement to come into action. Look at Iraq- the U.S knew from the Gulf War the country was a push over. There was valuable resources in the region, it was a region which the U.S wanted to influence especially after 9/11. And it could be justified by them because Sadam Husein was crazy.

But look at North Korea, a country who openly hates America. They also torture there own civilians in the biggest h**l on earth. Amnesty International even condemns the country! Think about that, a war where Amnesty International would probably support you and not campaign against you. But they also have a large arsenal of WMDs, and a strong military. There are no resources of value or a geographical advantage of the region.

Now look at Georgia. It has a pipeline project affecting how much Mr and Mrs Smith in the UK will pay for there gas prices. It is situated in the Balklands, maybe strategically important 40 years ago but not any more. And then who's invading them? Russia. A country ruled by ex-KGB Putin who want to flex there Nationalistic muscle once again. Russia also has the support of a large portion of the Georgian population. And Russia may have been hit hard by the collapse of the Cold War and there economic problems but they still have a vast force. Would America want to fight against this and spark a world war? I don't think so. Especially when the U.S has its fingers in other pies i.e Iraq.

I think if Russia advance further and finally topple Georgia we are going to see big problems. Expect big resistance from Turkey. But I doubt the U.S will send more than post invasion peace keeping force to the region.

  3. Yes

I think we (the US) should stay out and let Europe fight this battle though - since it impacts Europe very directly. We should support Europe and Georgia though.

Russia is trying to annex and block Georgia (a strong US ally) from having another oil pipeline to Europe - ie Russia wants to control Europe's energy and doesn't mind killing innocent Georgian civilians in the process. This is very bad news for Europe and democracies world-wide

BTW - The cowardly socialist European leaders who wouldn't admit Georgia into NATO a few months back - despite the Georgian president's pleas then that this would happen - should be beyond ashamed of themselves! I think the cowardly Obama would similarly cave-in to Russia and not support Georgia being in NATO

Russia needs to be taught a lesson here and not return to their imperialist recent past!

    Peace

  4. well first off we never lost our whole Pacific fleet don't be so dramatic. second off we did something when our Allies were fighting. ever hear of lend lease? we were supplying Russia,UK, and China along with their Allies while we were still neutral. we were escorting Allied convoys before we were ever in the war, as a matter of fact the USS Reuben James was sunk by a German U-boat in Oct 1941 which was well before the US declared War on Germany. we were very much involved in WW II before we were ever in WW II.

How do you know there is a lack of interest in the Russian and Georgia conflict? i hear lots of interests on the subject. i would be willing to bet that there is plenty of interest in the subject you , and I just aren't high enough on the list to know what all is going on.

  5. Listen the Georgians started this DELIBERATELY pulling a fast one, while Putin and Bush were in China, and "NO" it's not going to lead to world war 3, it is none of our god-d@rn business, what they do in their own freakin neighborhood, besides the Georgians have already agreed to a cease fire, and they should stick to it, if they know what's good for them, get a grip and calm down.

  6. Unfortunately, we screwed ourselves on this.  Our military is tapped out right now on Iraq and Afghanistan.  We don't have the resources for this.  Instead of occupying a country needlessly, we should have looked at the rest of the world and kept our eye on the ball.  You are absolutely right though by saying that Americans cannot afford to see these world issues as "not our problem."  Anyone who disagrees with that has either a political agenda or is just in denial.
