Question:

Is the largest terrestrial, true desert predator the caracal?

I realise it is quite small, but if not the caracal, then what animal would it be?

The fennec fox?!

  1. Caracals don't just live in the desert-they are found in grassland as well. They are not very big and I would not say that they are a true desert predator any more than the brown hyena which lives in the Namib desert and is certainly bigger. There ARE desert lions that live in the Kalahari but again they are not true desert predators. There are even crocodiles that have been found in the Atlas Mountains on the fringe of the Sahara. They were found in deep caves without any water, waiting for the next time it rained and replenished the ponds. Sometimes, incredibly the may wait several years before emerging. They accomplish this by practically shutting down their motor and just coasting with their body ticking over very slowly


  2. Isn't that a Fennec in your picture?

    It would depend on the country you're talking about, but I'd say the largest would be a species of Eagle.
