Is the lie that Columbus discovered America still being told in schools?

I was a nosy little kid in school and liked to read. It wasn't long before I discovered that the vikings had an outpost on the America mainland for a number of years, Irish monks had come over at least once and the Portuguese were regularly fishing off the grand banks of Canada. When I learned that, I lost faith in most of what teachers were teaching.

Since no one has a permanent settlement on the moon yet has anyone discovered it?

Who cares we get a day off from school and work  let every1 pretend he discovered america.

The Portuguese were fishing off the Brazilian coast. Besides, there is evidence that Chinese people also "discovered" America long before Columbus.

In everything else you are right. And I still think there is a difference between "visited" and "discovered".

After Columbus people in Europe officially learned that there is another land in the West. Before him it was a knowledge of very few people.

it's definitely not taught as much as it used to, but it is still taught around the U.S.
