  2. Perseverance as with anything

else has its place.  If there's

no way to reach a goal, get to

    the next level, reality should

    kick in.

    At that point, one should

    realize it's pointless to

    continue.

  3. Dreams come true.  Without that possibility, nature wouldn't incite us to have them.  Perseverance and persistence will get you there.  Frequently, it is the last dejected effort that becomes the winning stroke.  Cool question!

  4. Both.  In my experience, it depends on the situation as to whether it is considered "giving up" or "coming to your senses" by ceasing to persevere.

    An example of Giving Up:

I held on to my old career MUCH longer than I should have, even though it was making me miserable, stressed, depressed, etc.  You could call it 'persevering against all odds', but really it was 'sticking my head in the sand and praying everything else would go away'.  I held out as long as I did out of fear - of failing, of the unknown, of starting over, of going unemployed, etc.  I kept going until I gave up, because I finally couldn't take it any more; God only knows how I kept going as long as I did!

An example of Coming to Your Senses:

For the longest time, I refused to watch the "Lord of the Rings" movies or to have anything to do with any of the merchandising.  I thought the whole thing was completely over-hyped and obnoxiously ubiquitous.  I also had major doubts as to whether the movies would stay (mostly) true to the books.  A friend of mine kept pestering me until I realized how ridiculous I was being, and watched the movies (extended of all, in a 24 hour period... oy).  Afterwards, I saw that I was holding out out of sheer stubbornness, and nothing else...  The movies really are well done, by the way.

  5. Perseverance is when you continue to do something in spite of objections or obstacles,it's not giving up,it's going that bit extra to achieve your goal.

  6. Words can be tricky.  To persevere according to my children`s dictionary is to keep at something IN SPITE of difficulties, opposition, or discouragement.

So nagging is perseverance?  Lengthy wars are perseverance?

What is the limit to those as you say?  The limit is death of the physical body, preferably someone else`s.  Well that`s the limit at one end of the argument.  At the other end would be to persevere at not persevering, my adopted choice, to let him or her be, to let it be.

All my dreams come true, though often not exactly in the way I thought they would, but then I can always sharpen up my images of what it is that I really want and ``Bob`s your uncle``  as they say, or ``Voila !``.  Magic!

  7. yes, it is both. quitting is quitting, perseverance endures unto death.

  8. "To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose..."

There are times when we realize that what we are attempting is probably not going to succeed. That doesn't necessarily mean that we should give up.

The Olympic Games are being held right now. Several of the competitors have been in situations where they realized that despite their best efforts they were not going to win -yet most of them did not give up, they kept going until the competition was over. The limit of their perseverance was acknowledgment that they had not won.

At other times, however, something such as an injury prevents an athlete from doing their best. Continuing would not result in glory and might end in further injury. At such times it is best not to persevere.
