Is the lower unit housing for a 89 omc cobra interchangeable with another manufacturer?

I need to replace the lower unit housing and I have heard that it could be interchangeable with a johnson or envinrude. Mine is a omc v8 engine. Does anybody have a clue ????

  1. OMC makes Cobra which is inboard/outboard. They also make Johnson/Evinrude which  are outboards. I don't know about the ability to exchange them. Could be


  2. Although Johnson and Evinrude were also OMC products, you cannot use an outboard gearcase on a sterndrive.  Also you can not use a mercruiser or penta gearcase.  

    The only exception is if you have a Cobra SX outdrive.  Then you could use a Penta SX gearcase.

  3. No...each manufacturer is different and you can't use a merc or Volvo lower unit on an OMC
