I'm 6 foot 9" tall I'd like to take up golfing but the manager of the sporting goods store says I'm to tall to play golf. He told me even if he could get the shafts to fit me, I would be bending the shafts or breaking the shafts off at the hosel due to the extended length of the shaft. He said I would be always having to have the the clubs aligned He really didn't come across as being serious to me. More like he was laughing at me for even wanting to play golf.

  1. many tall ppl play golf. look at all the b-ball players...doesn't Jordan play? the guy is a moron....

  2. Some people know what they are saying. Others think they know what they are saying. Many don't know what they are saying. So you found a manager of a sporting goods store who fell into category # 3, the Don't know. If you desire to play the game, check with a PGA member who is a club pro. Explain your desire and  see what he would  recommend. Then, take it from there.

  3. If yor that tall, I would go with a custom set of clubs.  Golfsmith will measure you for free.  Their custom made clubs (snake eyes heads) are very good and very reasonably priced.

never go back to that store -- what bad advise.

  4. the guys is a idiot , you can totally golf , Of course you will need to get custom clubs but you can get them no problem. I'm 6'2" and i got some used custom clubs that my friend had that was taller then me. he is 6'5" and he is great. plays for U of O. good luck.

  5. If they can make golf clubs for basketball players they can make golf clubs for you. The only thing is that more than likely you will be fitted with a stiffer flex shaft to compensate for the added length. But it all depends on you. If you have long arms you might not need as much extra added length. One of my coworkers is 6' 3" and uses regular length clubs. Try a different golf shop, maybe one where they actually treat their customers well.

    Good Luck

  6. custom fit clubs aren't hard to get.  go online and look for a good knock off set then find a person to fit you.  a golf pro would be essential in this process but go to a golfsmith or golf specialty store.  as for the hozzles the manager is an idiot.  Tiger can bench 310+ he is 6'4", don't see him breaking too many.

  7. I'm a little over 6'-5" and I just got fitted for a set a few weeks ago.  With you being that tall I would just go to a local shop and get fitted properly for a set.  Two of the stores that I know that offer this are Golf Galaxy and Golfsmith.  I'm sure there are others around you though.

  8. Whoever you spoke to is absolutely retarded!  Just because you're 6'9'' has nothing to do with the club length.  Custom fitting for length is all about how long your arms are and how far your hands are for the ground.  Now granted, if you're 6'9'' and you have short arms, then yeah, you're going to need much longer clubs (and probably more upright I would guess).  Bust most people that tall have long arms and actually don't need more than a 1/2'' or 3/4''.

The best way to get fit is by each companies professionals on demo days.  You can look on each manufacturers website and they'll have (or should) a list of demo days at local country clubs, golf courses, or golf stores.  That is the best opportunity for someone to get fit by legit professionals.  Outside of that, never go back to that store and go to a legit club fitter at another store.

You'll love your advantage in golf when you start playing.  Tall people usually have an easier time building distance ... I can only wish, haha.

  9. Working at a sports store, im totally embarrassed to hear this story.  The store manager deserves to be fired.  You can absolutely play golf.  Henrick Stenson (Pro) is very tall, like 6'7 or so I think.  They make shafts that are 50inches long, and then you can have them cut to your standards.  But what you should do is go to a golf store and get fitted.  They will tell you how long your shafts should be and everything.  It might be an expensive trip by the time you get done, but it will be worth it in the end.  Again, I truly apologize to you in the name of all sporting store workers.

  10. Not a very good salesman to say the least.  But in spite of your height you might not even need custom fitted or longer than normal clubs.  The lenght of club a player needs has nothing to do with how tall they are - only the distance between their hands and the ground.  If your arm length is in proportion to the rest of your body, standard length clubs will be fine.

  11. More likely, He did not have any clubs that would fit you.  rather than admit it......He offered the lamest thought process in the world.   My advice......find a better golf store to purchase your equipment from.  Enjoy the game!
