Hi, I am visiting Miami in Dec. (staying in south beach, but want to see other things in miami as well) I was wondering is the metro bus system is safe in Miami. I am just wondering because everytime I tell someone I am going to miami, I get some lecture on how there's a lot of crime, and that downtown is scary, which apparently is where the main bus transfer station is. Any suggestions?

  1. The buses are safe.  So are the downtown bus stops.  Downtown has its usual share of scary looking types but it also has lots of people, police, etc.

  2. Miami proper is one of the most dangerous cities in the United States. If you absolutely want to visit it, I would recommend doing it during the day and preferably by car.

But Greater Miami has lots of nice and safe municipalities such as South Beach, Miami Beach or Coral Gables. You can safely walk at night  in those places although (like anywhere else) they are always some precautions to be taken.

  3. Depend to the area you r going is more or less dangerous, also depend the time of the day, I wouldn't go to down town after 5 pm. The bus sometime take forever or you have to take 4 buses to get from A to B. The metro is nicer. But if you can affor it rent a car is better

  4. I don't recommend the bus system AT ALL. Rent a car, or stay on So Beach.  The transit system is not efficient and you will end up spending hours trying to get to things that are spread all over. And it's dangerous. You don't know the areas and believe the stories, you don't want to be standing waiting for a bus in many areas.  The Tri-Rail is fine, but rather limited on where you can go--it only runs north and south from Palm Beach County, through Broward and down through Miami-Dade County. Then you have to go from there. Forget downtown, it's mostly financial district and you may need to speak Spanish to shop.

Rent a car, save yourself the stress and danger.  have fun!

  5. Assuming you can rent a car, Florida car rental is as cheap as it gets.  I personally feel the metro (Our version of a el or elevated Train) is nice, and I don't feel there's any problem using it, I also have heard some very disparing reports of city bussing.  I personally have never used it, nor would I recommend it based on first hand reports.

North from Miami is the Tri-Rail, and it is like Miami's Metro.  Above ground light rail (people mover).
