  1. ok, someone said Canada like everyother country has it's own currency. What ever happened to the Euro, a LOT of Euro countries use that. Over 15 I believe. but no, things do not cost more, they cost less due to the exchange rate.

  2. The Canadian dollar and the US dollars are close in value at the moment.  But almost everything costs more in Canada because of a number of things like a smaller market, higher taxes and import costs.

  3. Yes, things generally cost more in Canada, although with the devalued American dollar things are more even than they have been in a while.

Still, living on the American-Canadian border (Detroit-Windsor), I see many things that are still remarkably more expensive here in Canada.  Gas, for example, is about $4.00 in Detroit right now; here in Windsor, we are paying about $l.32 a litre, or about $5.30+ a gallon.  Liquor and cigarettes are still considerably more expensive.  Sales tax here in Ontario is 13%; in Michigan, it is 6%.  Clothing items, shoes, etc., I still buy in the States as I still find them considerably cheaper.  Same with household furnishings.  As much as our government claims to have narrowed the gap between prices, due to the strengthening Canadian dollar, I still see a good-sized difference on most things.

Right now, it is costing me about $1.02 to buy an American dollar; for an American dollar right now, you can get about 98 cents Canadian.

  4. No, the money is not the same.  Canada, like every country in the world, has its own money. It's called a dollar in Canada, as it is in some other countries besides the US, but it isn't worth the same as a US dollar. Some things cost more in Canada, some things cost the same or less. Perhaps on the whole they cost a bit more because Canadians pay taxes to help support our health care system, but many people will argue that there's not much real difference between prices in the US and Canada.

Yes, there's the Euro which is used by a bunch of countries but I was trying to point out, to someone who doesn't already know it, that money is different in different places. And the exchange rate varies. A while ago things cost less in Canada if you were coming from the US, a smaller while ago they would have cost more, right now the currencies are very close in value. That could change anytime. Tomorrow, for instance.
