  1. What an interesting question!  Have a star!

In my case, although 'Nelly' is my name on YA, I have borrowed it from my beloved cat who I named 'Nelson' as he only had 3 legs.  I also used to call him 'Nelly Boy' or 'Nelly' when calling him in from the garden.  You should have seen my 'Nelly Boy' (Nelson') bounding down the garden as fast as his 3 little legs would carry him, when I used to call him in for his 'foodies'!

Sadly; Nelson my tuxedo cat, is not with me anymore.  But I'm sure my 3 legged faithful friend is now bounding around in cat heaven on all 4 legs.

I was half wondering if you were having a laugh david g, by asking this question; but then I thought to myself: "Not on your Nelly - he would never do that."

  4. My daughter is Helen and is often called Nell or Nelly because written backwards, the Helen becomes "Neleh", or Nelly.

  6. My great grans name was actually Helen, but she was always ways known as Nelly or Nell.

    Ellen

English: originally a variant of Helen, although now no longer associated with that name. Initial H- tended to be added and dropped rather capriciously, leading to many doublets (cf. e.g. Esther and Hester; Éloise and Héloïse). Pet form: Nell.

    Nelly

English: short form of Eleanor, Ellen, and Helen; of medieval origin, but now also established as a given name in its own right. For an explanation of the initial N-, cf. Ned. It was the name by which Charles II's mistress Eleanor Gwyn (1650–87) was universally known to her contemporaries, and at about that time it also became established as an independent name. Cognate: Irish Gaelic: Neile.

    Pet forms: English: Nellie, Nelly.

    Hope this helps.

  7. It was commonly a nickname for Eleanor, Ellen, Petronella (among the Dutch immigrants, especially). There are other names, obviously from which is was a pet name. But these were the major ones in the US.
