  1. It may be Dutch.  Many American names that begin with "de" are Dutch rather than French, as they may appear at first.  If the part after the "de" doesn't look French, chances are that the name is Dutch and that the "de" means "the," not "of."


  2. It's very possibly a form of Demarest, which is actually one of the original Dutch colonial families with French roots. They have a great website that you might find helpful:
