If you are looking purely at power consumption, of course the answer is yes.

If you want another answer to your question, in my opinion, almost all TV use is harmful to Mother Earth. Our culture has become one of consume and destroy, and TV is a primary advocate of this. It has become our friend when we are lonely, our babysitter, and the teacher of our children (there is even a baby oriented channel on cable television now). It teaches passivity, while removing you from the "real world"... A little is fine, but who stops at a little? How many people who have television watch one or two hours a week? Most will sit there for hours on end, producing nothing but wasted electricity.

The larger the tv the more power it consumes and the more power consumption = more pollution to produce the power.  The larger the tv also the more lead cadmium and other nasty heavy metals and toxins.  and if you throw away an otherwise good tv to replace it with an hdtv its just that much more of an insult to the environment.  By the way plasmas when in sleep still consume alot of energy sometimes over 100watts to keep the plasma warmed up for the off chance you want to watch it.  LCDs use less power than plasma but if you are upgrading from a smaller tv you'll still use more power than the smaller one.
