New Moon was yesterday at 19:58 UT, 3:58 p.m. EDT.

Because of the current angle of the ecliptic with the horizon, it will be hard to see for Northern Hemisphere observers tonight, a bit easier tomorrow night. Look to the left of the Sun just after sunset. The New Moon will be well placed for observers in the Southern Hemisphere tonight. In fact, Mars, Mercury, Venus, and the Moon will be neatly stacked in a compact group right after sunset tonight and tomorrow night for southern observers.

Seriously, the new Moon just occurred yesterday, and is now beginning it's progression toward first quarter, which will be on September 7th.
