Is the nitty gritty dirt band also know as "the band?"?

Starting in Longbeach, California in 1966 as the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, I first heard of them when they sang 'Hand me down that can of beans' in Paint your Wagon.

From 1976-81 they changed the name to 'The Dirt Band' only to go back to the original name in 1982.
