  1. the boxers are all amatuers as they  are not allowed to compete if they are pro's. Amir Khan won silver in Athens but is now a pro so can't compete in the olympics. however in the football pro's are allowed, such as Ronaldinho. Some of the athletes are athletes full time but others also have jobs. It all depends on whether the athletes need to earn extra money by getting a job

  2. It used to be an amateur sport back in the 80s or so, around that era, that's why the U.S. Men's Hockey team beating the USSR was so big, because they were amateurs and the Soviet Union's hockey team were pretty much all pros. But, now it is not considered an amateur sport.

  3. It's both.

  4. The only Olympic sport in which professionals cannot compete is boxing. Soccer allows three players over the age of 23. Originally it was an amateur competition, but because athletes started to receive endorsements from sponsors, the IOC decided to change the rules. The IOC lets the sport's governing body decide whether amateurs or pros can compete.

In response to "Olympic Break", most swimmers are professional, especially Michael Phelps, he received a millions dollars from his SPONSOR Speedo.

Once you receive money for doing a sport, you are considered professional. Also, pros are allowed in the cycling, Lance Armstrong competed in the time trials at the 2000 Olympics, and he is definitely a pro. Baseball (now a discontinued olympic sport after 2008) allowed pros, but the US baseball teams did not want to release their players for the Olympics.

  5. Biggest sporting event every four years

    No way it's for amateurs.

  6. Are you serious???  What ever gave you the impression that it was ever amateur?

  7. When the Olympics started, it was originally a place for amateurs, or people who were not being paid on a professional level, to compete against one another in a sport. However, due to some change of rules, in several of the events- such as tennis, they are now allowing professionals to compete against amateurs. I am not sure how the decision is made to let certain certain professionals compete, whereas others, such as; basketball, soccor etc. can not.

  8. Its for the absolute best amateurs in the world except for in track, volleyball, tennis and basketball. Pro's arent allowed in so many sports like swimming (yes phelps is not considered pro hes just that good!), boxing, wrestling, baseball/softball, cycling, gymnmastics. Its simply because pros would obviously pwn at their sports their in. Thats why they give amateurs a chance every four years, the olympics!

So i guess there is no definate category but the majority is amateurs.
