  1. Pentax is not a good brand.  If you want a good camera, stay with well known names.  Like Canon or Sony.

  2. Pentax is an excellent brand. Just because they do not have a $5,000 USD body like Nikon, or an $8,000 body like Canon doesn't mean they wont take great pictures. Pentax has a few things over every other brand

    1. Best rated kit lens (www.dpreview.com)

    2. only one still using metal lens mounts on basic lenses.

    3. Only system to have all current bodies weather sealed.

    4. Only system to be able to fully use every Pentax lens ever made (all 26 million of them)

    5. Only camera to be able to shoot infrared in camera (Pentax K20D)

    6. Only camera to DSLR to shoot 21 fps (at 1.6 meg mode)

    7. Only system to have shifted fully to SD cards (and have been there for years)

    8. only system to have all current camera with in body shake reduction

Canon and Nikon are like Pepsi and Coke or Keebler and Nabisco. are there other Cola's or cookies out ther sure, and some of them are better. those two guys just put more into marketing.

  3. I've used Pentax SLRs, film and digital, for years but I can't speak about the compact, point and shoot versions.

The SLRs I've used are well-made and offered excellent value for money, often making Nikon look quite over-priced.

I would look elsewhere if I had $2K to spend.  I don't.  But the money I've spent on my Pentaxes has been well-rewarded.

PS:  If you're looking for a DLSR, look carefully at the Nikon D40 with a VR (Vibration Reduction) lens.  I have to admit that it's a pretty good value right now if the Pentax weather protection isn't important to you.

  4. I think Pentax is a great brand. They make excellent cameras, but haven't developed the household name that some other brands have. I own a Pentax K110D which is a DSLR and the pictures and quality are similar to my Canon Rebel XTi.

Pentax was more popular in with film. They jumped into digital quickly, but only offered a few models. This might be why they aren't as popular. If you are looking at point and shoots, the only brand I would recommend over a Pentax is Canon. Hope this helps.

  5. Pentax is an excellent brand. Their DSLR cameras still use the same K-mount introduced in 1975 so you have an excellent selection of legacy lenses as well as modern AF ones.

The venerable 35mm film SLR K1000, introduced in 1975, is still considered an excellent student camera.

Anyone who denigrates Pentax simply has no idea what they are talking about.
