Question:

Is the person supposed to call to tell you if you got the job or not?

I recently completed a job interview on Monday and an observation time on Wednesday. The lady who interviewed me said that she would call me on Friday. It is now Saturday and I haven't heard anything. My question is, is the person supposed to call you to tell you that you didn't get the job. Also I want to know what is proper phone etiquette when trying to get a hold of the person...I have already called once and was sent to her voice mail I left a message saying has she talked to the person I observed...so should I keep trying once a day until I get in contact with her.

I also emailed her to thank her for interviewing me and in the email I very casually wrote "i hope i am offered a job at such a wonderful establishment" Do you think this was a smart thing to do? Please help me I am freaking out I really want this job.

  1. It really depends on the person as to whether or not they'll call back.  Most of the time they only call the person they selected because it would take too long to call all of the applicants.

It's good to make contact after the interview to show you were really interested and to thank the interviewer for taking their time to talk to you.  I would have left the "wonderful establishment" bit out myself - I think it sounds a bit trite.  You wouldn't say "I hope I get a job at your crappy company."  Of course you think it's wonderful, or  you want the interviewer to think that you think that it's wonderful.  "I hope that we will be working together in the near future" or something like that is a bit less dramatic, IMHO.

It's perfectly ok to call back.  I used to use the "I was just wondering if you'd had a chance to look over the applications/review our conversation.", "I was just wondering about the status of my application"  *or* you can be "Just wanting to call and thank you again for the interview".  Its not ok to openly put pressure on the interviewer, but they kinda know what you want too.  The best thing to do is not to leave a voicemail, but to try again later with the hopes that you'll actually reach the person you want to talk to.  Once you leave the message, your excuse to call is used up.  :/

Good luck with the job hunt!

  2. Sorry to say this but most often, the successful applicants are the ones notified. By e/mail or by phone.

lt's the practice here in our place. Maybe those companies don't have the heart to inform the applicants who didn't make it.

Wait for two to five days more (max).

    Good luck.

  3. It could be that she is off sick, that is why

    she hasn't contacted you.

I would leave it until Monday, and then try

    again.

    Good luck !

  4. I think it was smart.  It shows politeness for sending the email and shows you are very interested in the job.  People sometimes are very busy at work and do not get to place all their calls on the day they think they will.  I would call on Monday.  Good luck.  I hope you get the job!!

  5. chances are , only the successful applicants will be notified, but there is no lost if should just call her. this is because if she says's she is undecided, that means you have a chance to 'sell ' yourself on the phone, again. this is could turn out to be the critical point,

  6. I agree with the people who are saying that usually the person who is offered a job gets the call.  I hope that's not the case in your situation because you clearly show enthusiasm for it.  You'd be surprised how many people don't even send a thank you note of any kind!  I would not call again in case she was sick, on vacation or too busy to make all of her calls on Friday.

That said, she may not share your good attitude.  She doesn't need to acknowledge your thank you email but she definitely should address your voicemail.  She can call or email you with an explanation.  If not, I'd be concerned about whether she has any respect whatsoever.   If she's good, she'll make sure you know where you stand.
