Is the pill effective yet?

My girlfriend has been on the pill (28 day version) now for 2 weeks, and was late taking it 8 days ago by 5-6 hours. She began taking it the first Sunday after the start of her period (which was a Saturday). We decided to get on the pill as an added precaution (rather than relying on condoms alone). Last night the condom broke, so I am wondering: Has the pill become effective in her system yet to prevent pregnancy? I have heard that it takes 7 days to become effective, and you should also wait 7 days if you are late taking it at all.

So should we be worried or has the pill become effective in her system?

  1. Yes, she should now be protected from getting pregnant.

As for the issue of if you are late in taking the pill just on one day she just goes ahead and takes the next pill depending on how much of a time difference there is between when she remembers to take it and the actual time she usually takes it.

I would recommend that she check with her doctor as well to see what they say.
