Is the play "Romeo and Juliet" an Elizabethan play?

  1. Queen Elizabeth I reigned until 1603.  Shakespeare wrote "Romeo and Juliet" in the 1590s.  So yes, the play is from the Elizabethan period.

  3. The one by Shakespeare ... yes, we generally include it in the Elizabethan time frame because his version was probably written in the 1590's. It was published late in that decade, and Queen Elizabeth lived until 1603.

    As usual, Shakespeare borrowed heavily from other sources, although filling it out with minor characters of his own devising.

    This particular story was by an Italian writer named Bandello (sp?) who lived from the late 1400's to about the 1560's. His work (at least, this story) was translated into English and published a couple of times in the late 1500's.

    Shakespeare wrote it during Queen Elizabeth's reign so I guess it counts, unless if I haven't be studying on the subject hard enough (:
