So I went to jump start my Mom's car for her today, and discovered her batteries terminals are mounted on the side.

I've jump started my own cars for years now, and have even helped out a stranded motorist or two, so I know the usual drill, but this is the first time I've encountered a battery like this. Is the procedure the same? Do I need different jumper cables? Any advice?

Thanks.

  1. yes same way did you know if you do this too many times that you will need a new battery or alternator sooner then normal that is why i never do this.

  2. There are special battery cables with extended side clamps that work a little better while jumping a side terminal battery. Always attach the cables to the dead battery first being sure the opposite cable ends are not touching anything. Finish by attaching the positive cable end terminal to the positive terminal of the car or truck with the good battery with the motor running. Attach the negative terminal table clamp to a clean dry surface of the frame or body brace of the car that's running then start the car.

The reason for all this stuff is the dead battery has explosive gasses roaming all around it so you do not want sparks here. That's why to always hook the open ended cables to the dead battery first and always.

  3. red to red  both batteries black on black dead one black on something medal on good one or black on black either way.. just make sure red goes with red and black to black

  4. the process is the same but you can find a different type of jumper cables or a set of side post adapters for that.

  5. Same thing, just make sure you match up the positive and the negative with their respective cables.

  6. yes

  7. I saw a guy jump start a car on a commercial by hooking them up to his nipples..Hope this helps

  8. It's the same.  You just have to make sure you get the Positive to Positive connection and the Negative to Negative connections right.  Some jumper cables have modified clamps to fit the side terminals.  Be careful.

  9. Yes, the very same. Red (Pos) on red and Black (Neg) on black.
