If your thing of shampoo is like 4.2oz will they still make you trash it? Do they actually read the label to make sure it adheres to under 3 oz.? Because I have some 4.2oz items that look smaller than my 2.7oz items. I haven't flown in a while. Im going from CA to TX and will only be using 1 carry on piece of luggage.

  1. The 3 oz rule is set in stone as described in detail at the TSA website and usually provided by your airline.  However, I can tell you as a platinum elite flyer with close to a million miles, the degree to which they enforce the 3 oz rule is totally dependent on the airport and personnel working when you go through.  Some employees are very strict and will follow the rules to the letter, others will let minor things slide.

Your best bet is to strictly follow the rules with regards to carry on bags.

An alternative to carry on is to simply buy your liquids, gels, and aerosols at your destination for a low cost and leave them when you return.

As a side note from CA to TX...

Depending on the airline and type of plane, you may not be able to carry your carry on on the plane.  Regional jets have very small compartments for carry on bags.  Anything bigger then a puse or briefcase may be required to be checked anyway.  You should contact the airline and ask to save yourself a lot of stress the day of travel.

  2. It all depends on the screener you get.  Some are more diligent than others, some are downright neurotic about it.

It's possible you will get through, but if they do check be prepared to smile and toss the container.
